Advertising on Twitter

Twitter ads are a great way to grow your following and get your message out.  There are two types of campaigns: promoted accounts and promoted tweets.

Promoted accounts ads your account to the list of who to follow.  You pay per follow.  Promoted accounts help you gain followers.  You can target your audience using interests and followers or tailored audience.

Promoted tweets ads your tweet to the timeline.  You pay per engagement including; click, retweet, reply, favorite, or follow. Promoted tweet will help you increase traffic to the desired site.  For both campaigns there are settings that you can customize to meet your needs. You can target your audience using interests and followers, tailored audience, keywords, or television.

For both campaigns you can customize the run time and budget.  The campaign can either run continuously or you can set a start and end date.  The budget should have a total maximum amount and daily maximum amount. This will help you stay within your marketing budget.  You also set your maximum price per engagement.  This is how much each engagement is worth to your business.

You can target your audience by using specific Interests or Followers.  The specific interests will allow you to choose from a variety of categories.  If the user has that interest your account will show up under the who to follow section.  You can also include other accounts by entering the usernames.  Twitter will find users similar to these and target them also.

You can also create lists and target users by Tailored Audience.  You can create lists of current and perspective customers.  You can create a list using email addresses or Twitter IDs.

You can also use Keywords to find your audience.  You can enter multiple keywords that you would like to target as well as the negative match.  When a user searches for these keywords your tweets will show up.

Lastly is Television.  You can target a group of users based on the television shows that they engage with.  You can select different television markets and locations.

Timing your Tweets

Twitter is constantly receiving new tweets.  People and companies tweet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  People also live in different time zones so their posting schedule may be different from yours.  With all of these posts it is easy for your posts to get lost or missed.  There are many ways to get your tweets noticed.

Think about when people are checking Twitter.  People are more likely to check during lunch, after work, and in the evening.  Many people are rushed in the morning, so they might not check Twitter or might spend less time than they would in the evening.

Tweet a few times a day.  The more often you tweet, the more likely you are to get noticed.  However, you should not tweet too frequently.  No one wants to see a timeline full of only your tweets.  Also, tweet different content.  Do not tweet the same tweet a hundred times.  If it is important you can and should tweet it more than once, but not all within the same hour or day.  Also don’t post too sporadically.  People will forget about your company and content.

Connecting on Twitter

You must connect with your followers and Twitter is very social.  You want to get your tweets retweeted and favorited so you will reach a larger audience. You can do this by reaching out to your followers.

One of the easiest ways to connect is to ask questions.  Make sure the questions are relevant to your business and can be answered in less than 140 characters.  You can also have a contest on Twitter.

Lastly, you should respond to tweets.  If someone mentions you in a tweet there should be some kind of a response.  You can favorite the tweet, or retweet it.  If their tweet requires an answer you should reply.

Creating Twitter Content

The most important part of composing a tweet is the content.  The tweet must have valuable and shareable content to get noticed.  Tweets should be from three different categories: your own content, other’s content, and personal content.

Your own content can be links to articles you have written, information about your business, or promotional offers.  However, no one wants to only see information promoting a company, so you should include other content.

Content for other sources is a great way to connect with other people within your industry.  You can share articles that are relevant to your industry, news, or current events.  You should also retweet other people’s tweets that you find relevant to your business.  Lastly, include some personal content.  Mention holidays or other events that are coming up.  You can also tweet personal information that your followers can connect with, but avoid anything too personal or too controversial.

You can also tweet pictures.  Visual content always catches a viewer’s eye more than written content.  Just remember that sometimes only the link to the picture will show up on screen, so you should always include some written content as well.
You can also include links to articles, websites, blogs, or images.  You should use a short link in a tweet because it is limited to 140 characters including links.  If you are using Twitter to create traffic for your website or blog it is important to include a link to the site.

Lastly, hashtags are very important on Twitter.  Hashtags help people search for a particular topic and links those tweets together.  You can also create your own hashtag to create a community of followers or start a conversation.  Remember to keep it short.  You want to allow people to tweet a message and the hashtag within the character limit.  You should also use popular hashtags or hashtags created by others.  This allows you to connect with people outside of your current following.
